IR Lenses

Germanium Lenses

High-performance infrared focusing with germanium optics.

Introduction

Optical-grade germanium is widely used for infrared lenses because of its high refractive index and strong transmission in the infrared region. These properties allow germanium lenses to achieve substantial optical power with relatively compact curvature, making them well suited to space-conscious infrared optical designs.

Germanium also has relatively low dispersion across much of the infrared spectrum, which helps limit chromatic variation in infrared imaging systems. Because its high refractive index also increases surface reflection, anti-reflection coatings are typically important for improving usable transmission and overall lens efficiency.
